Gtldna, otherwise known as the Genetic Testing Laboratories Inc., specialize in providing DNA tests for predisposed conditions and paternity testing. They are based in New Mexico and claim to have a 99.999% accuracy rate. Their site displays a litany of qualifications including the fact that they are accredited by the AABB (American Association of Blood Banks) the CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments) and are an ISO 9001 Compliant Facility. This slew of certificates is reassuring and lets customers know that their DNA is in safe hands.

The procedures offered by the company are:

DNA Predisposition Test – $265

The $79 Paternity Test Kit

The $95 Collect and Send Today Paternity Test

The Legally Binding Paternity Test – $230

DNA Predisposition Testing
The purpose of this test is to find out whether or not you are predisposed towards certain medical conditions. This test can find out if you are susceptible to any one of 25 conditions including Lupus, Obesity, Heart Disease, Breast Cancer and Alzheimer’s. You give them saliva and send it off to the company. Gtldna provides an express courier service and this is included in the price. If you live outside mainland USA, you will need to pay an extra $45. You should receive your results online within 2-4 weeks which includes a personalized report explaining your lifetime risk to the 25 diseases covered by the test.

The $79 Paternity Test Kit
This is a quick test that can help you find out whether or not you are the father of a child. 16 genetic markers are used in this test which tests the father, child and mother ($15 extra to test the mother). You will have the results online within 5 business days. You can choose between giving Buccal Swabs (collects DNA from inside your cheek) or blood samples. You can have the test within 24 hours for $400, $175 for next business day release, $125 for release after two days and $75 extra for results after three days.

$95 Collect And Send
This allows you to fill out forms, send off for the containers, give your samples and send them off. You will receive the results in 3-5 business days.

Legally Binding Paternity Test
Like the $79 test, the Legally Binding Paternity Test uses 16 genetic markers and offers Buccal Swabs or blood samples. It is different because Gtldna also offer legally binding status which includes proof of the identity of the test subjects and a chain of custody for the provided samples which must also include at least one witness. There are a host of other legal requirements and Gtldna fulfils them which is why this test is more expensive than the $79 option.

Verdict
The prices on offer make it easier than ever to settle issues of parentage. The legally binding test is a must-have for those involved in messy child support proceedings and can settle a very sensitive debate within a few days. The courier service is an excellent addition and the tests are almost always completely accurate. The same problems with parental testing remain however. It is too easy to cheat on the test unless a witness is present which makes the Legally Binding test a necessity. Those who are serious about the issue of parentage will ignore the cheap options and be 100% safe with the legal option.

23andMe are a private organization that perform genetic testing on consumers as a means of helping them learn more about their ancestry and health. There are 23 chromosomes in a normal human cell which is where the company gets its name. They claim to be able to test for 100 illnesses, traits and conditions. The company has gained national recognition and has featured on the Oprah Winfrey show as the Times and has also received an estimated $6.5 million from Google as the search engine giant decided to invest in the genetic testing company.

How It Works
The process is simplicity itself on your part. You order a kit from the site’s online store, register the kit, spit into it and send it off to the company’s lab. 23andMe’s lab has been certified by the CLIA and takes in the region of 6-8 weeks to analyze your results. Assuming you have registered correctly, you will be able to log in and see your results online.

When the 23andMe lab receives your sample, they extract DNA from the cheek cells. They copy the DNA for the next step which is genotyping. The DNA is cut into smaller pieces and entered onto a DNA chip which contains millions of surface microscopic beads. ‘Probes’, otherwise known as pieces of DNA, compliment sites in your genome where SNPs (single-nucleotide polymorphism) can be found. There are two SNPs, each of which have a pair of probes. When DNA pieces that compliment each other are found, they stick to the probes which match your SNP. We have 10 million or so SNPs in our genome on average and the above procedure tests one million of these SNPs.

Price
The basic kit costs $399 though it is available for $99 with a $9 monthly charge thereafter. In September 2011, the company announced that it was announcing a special program for current members known as Exome 80x. For $999, you can have 50 million base pairs of your exome examined.

Pros
The site provides members with updates about their DNA that have been made and is an extremely useful way of finding out if you have inherited any diseases. It can also be very exciting to discover your ancestry. If you qualify for certain research initiatives, you may even have the testing done absolutely free. The procedure itself couldn’t be easier and the results are often quite accurate. Although the current price range seems excessive, the process of SNP genotyping is a fraction of what it was just a few years ago.

Cons
It is not nearly as accurate as Full Genome Sequencing which costs around $5,000 to perform because it is a far more complex procedure. The Exome test is intriguing but, because it measures little or no Y chromosome or mitochondrial DNA, it is only a test for health and not ancestry. As the standard test doesn’t sequence your whole genome, it cannot be taken as a comprehensive health check.

Verdict
If you have the money available and have a genuine interest in learning more about your past, 23andMe offers you an exciting opportunity. Those hoping to know more about their health can get useful information but it may not be as accurate as a full medical performed by a doctor.

Beta Paternity are a private organization that provide paternity testing to a worldwide audience. They have been in business since 1996 and have a Beta Self-Collection Kit which they say is one of the quickest, easiest and most accurate home paternity testing kits on the market. The company is located in Ohio and owns the website www.betagenetics.com. They also claim that their testing is 99.9999% accurate when the supposed father, mother and child are all tested.

How Does It Work?
The company sell one main product: their Home Paternity Testing Kit which can be purchased online for just $199. It tests the mother, child and the possible father. Like many other home DNA testing kits, Beta Paternity’s kit allows you to give a DNA sample by swabbing the inside of your cheek. Each person to be tested receives four Buccal Swabs with special envelopes also provided. Swab as much as your cheek as possible and immediately place the swabs into separate labeled envelopes. Seal the envelopes and place them back into the collection kit which is then sent off to the one of the company’s many labs. You receive the kit within 24 hours of ordering and you can expect to receive results in as little as three working days.

Additional Information
One thing that sets Beta Paternity apart from the rest of the home testing paternity kit organizations on the market is the fact that they test every sample twice. Generally, only chain of custody labs perform this task. With two samples, the lab can then compare them side by side to ensure that no mix-ups or other mistakes have been made. This is a serious problem in other labs where a simple error can cause countless problems for a family.

DNA markers are used by scientists as a way to identify humans. A marker is essentially a small, recurring DNA sequence. The number of times a repeat is found in a marker varies from person to person. Generally, 13 DNA markers are said to be enough for positive identification but more is better. As a consequence, Beta Paternity use 16 DNA markers.

The company also offer a Double Guarantee to customers. First of all, they guarantee a 99.9999% accuracy rate when mother, child and possible father are involved with a 99.99% reading if the mother is not tested. They also guarantee that your results will be available within 3 business days of them arriving in one of their labs.

Beta Paternity also has a number of other services such as:

Prenatal Paternity Test

Maternity Test

Grandparentage Test

Twin Zygosity Test – Finds out whether twins are identical or not

Verdict
Beta Paternity offers a useful service and their 16 DNA markers and double testing ensures extreme accuracy. The only real problem with the service is the fact that it is not legally binding. However, Beta Paternity are closely related to DNA Diagnostics Center (DDC) which does provide legally binding paternity tests. Those who take a test with Beta Paternity are entitled to a $100 discount if they decide to undergo a legally binding test with DDC.

Homedna.com claims to have a testing procedure that cannot be beaten by any other home testing kit. It is another organization that is accredited by the American Association of Blood Banks. The base level of accuracy for home testing kits is set at 99%. HomeDNA are happy to announce that their basic level of accuracy is around 99.999% which is approximately 1,000 times above the basic level.

How Does It Work?
The site’s home testing procedure is remarkably similar to that of other sites. You have to:

Register Your Kit Online: Fill in the online form available on the site and enter the serial number of your kit once you receive it.

Take Samples: The kit includes a number of swabs which must be used to swipe the inside of your cheek. You then return the samples by placing them in a special envelope before sending them off to the company lab.

Results: In approximately 5 business days, you will receive your results which can be viewed online.

Cost
The HomeDNA Paternity Testing System costs just $78 and for that you receive all the necessary testing equipment which has been approved by the FDA. This test is designed for the possible father and child with an additional $25 to be paid if the mother is also to be tested. As this greatly increases the accuracy, customers are encouraged to avail of this option. It is possible to receive the results of this test overnight for just $12. The current price is a special offer as the product normally costs $150.

Other Information
HomeDNA use 16 DNA markers in their tests which is more or less industry standard. We know that a child inherits DNA from its mother and father, both of whom have 23 chromosomes. As each parent gives exactly half of the child’s DNA, a child is born with 23 pairs of chromosomes. There are specific DNA sequences in each pair that are analyzed and used to identify the parents of the child. The key to determining parenthood is through testing of these DNA sequences.

You can also get the testing system for just $8 which is the cost of shipping. You will be able to test yourself and the child but in order to receive the results, you still have to pay the $150 to cover lab fees. In this instance, adding an extra person costs $85 which means the original system is a far better bet at just $78.

Verdict
HomeDNA seems to offer a solid paternity test but there is nothing remarkable about it. There are more accurate testing kits. Beta Paternity’s kit achieves a 99.9999% accuracy which is 10 times more accurate. Also, it is not clear whether the 99.999% claim is for the paternity test where the mother is involved or not. This is significant; a test with the mother’s DNA can be between 10-100 times more accurate. That being said, HomeDNA’s special offer price of $78 is tempting and is well below the hundreds of dollars charged by other organizations. They also use 16 DNA markers so customers know that the company is definitely a professional outfit and produce extremely accurate results.

Home DNA testing has exploded in popularity in recent years yet there are a host of unanswered questions relating to the procedure. The main purpose of home DNA testing is to establish whether or not a man is the father of a child. It is an important issue and one that can be solved in less than a week thanks to amazing scientific advancements. Here are some common Q&A relating to home DNA testing.

How Does A Home DNA Test Actually Work?
Males and females have 23 chromosomes each. Children inherit half of each parent’s DNA so they end up with 23 pairs of chromosomes. Certain DNA sequences can be found and identified as belonging to the child’s parents. Establishing paternity is simply a matter of linking these matching DNA sequences.

What Is The Testing Procedure?
In most cases, you will receive a kit that includes special envelopes and Buccal Swabs. You take one of these swabs and rub it on the inside of your cheek. The swabs are then sealed in the envelope and returned to the lab. Some companies prefer to have a kit which has a container into which you spit. This is then sealed and sent to the lab.

What Should A Legitimate DNA Testing Company Have?
Only highly qualified staff should handle DNA testing. A home DNA testing company should have their own laboratory that have been accredited by the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) at the very least.

Who Takes The Test?
Ideally, the alleged father, the child and the mother should all be have DNA samples collected and tested. In most instances, this guarantees a success rate of 99.9999%. Testing can take place without the mother and be reasonably effective (99.99%) but having samples from all parties is preferable.

Is There An Age Limit On The Child To Be Tested?
No. The procedure is safe to use, even on newborn babies. In fact, paternity testing can take place before the child is even born by taking samples during certain points during the pregnancy.

How Do I Make The Test Legal?
Regular paternity tests may tell you who the father of a child is, but the results cannot be used in court unless certain criteria are met. A neutral witness such as a member of a clinic or lab has to witness the testing procedure before taking the sample away to be tested. Those who are giving samples must be positively identified. This includes being fingerprinted and photographed after showing a government-issue ID. The samples are watched carefully until the testing is complete. A Client Identification and Consent Form must be signed with a minor’s form signed by his/her legal guardian.

Is The Test Accurate If Two Alleged Fathers Are Related?
Yes. The DNA tests will still be accurate regardless of how closely the parties are related. No two people possess the exact same DNA which is why it is such an excellent way of testing for paternity. It was assumed that monozygotic twins had identical genomes and were indistinguishable in DNA terms but scientists have reported studies where even monozygotic twins had slight differences in copy number variation.

Can Paternity Testing Be Used To Test For Predisposed Illnesses?
Unfortunately, no. The DNA markers used to establish paternity are completely different to those used to give information on genetic defects, medical conditions and ancestry.

Technological advances have made the lives of some people easy while proving to be a thorn in the side of others. In the case of using DNA to test for paternity, the tests reveal who is or who isn’t the father of a child. While the results can cause joy for one side, they can be disastrous for another. In the United States, it is estimated that more than 30% of fathers who take a DNA paternity test discover that they are not the father of their child. DNA testing lays to rest an ancient law passed several hundred years ago which states that a man is the legal father of his wife’s child unless he can prove otherwise. The main means of proof being sterility or being outside the country at the time.

Expense
Taking such tests is extremely expensive however. Expect to pay around $1,000 to get tested at a lab. This is why home DNA paternity testing is becoming increasingly popular. Testing kits range can be purchased from just $29 and offer a speedy answer to the question of paternity. In fact, these tests are becoming so popular and are coming towards the realm of normality so quickly that home DNA paternity tests can be found on the shelves of some pharmacies, right beside home pregnancy kits.

The Testing Kit
Interested parties can also order a home DNA paternity testing kit from an online company. In general, the kit will have a trio of oral swabs. Each of the swabs has a different color and its own separate envelope. The test subject must place the swabs in his mouth and take a sample of DNA from his inner cheek. The child is question must also be tested to see if there is a match. Each test comes with a set of instructions that must be followed to the letter. A home DNA paternity test is the ultimate in convenience and is a more pleasant experience than the invasive procedure carried out at a laboratory. Post the samples to the correct address and expect to receive the results within 7 working days. There is even an option to receive the results via email.

Flaws In The Test
For all its convenience, a home DNA paternity test is extremely flawed. The very nature of the test means that it is easy to manipulate. There is nothing to stop a test subject from using someone else’s DNA. Men who are desperate to avoid paying child support will use this scam. Women can also cheat the test by taking DNA from a different child. As a consequence, a home DNA paternity test holds no sway in the court of law. If a woman believes a man is the father of her child, she needs to have his DNA taken by a registered nurse or doctor at a proper medical facility.

Home DNA paternity testing is a great way for men and women to have peace of mind. When the instructions are followed correctly, it gives an accurate test result which can help resolve certain issues. Of course, there is also the possibility of these tests opening up wounds that may never be healed. These tests are convenient and useful but should not be taken as absolute because it is too easy to cheat on the this type of test.

Home DNA testing kits are now widely available. It was not so long ago when DNA testing was the sole preserve of the wealthy. DIY home DNA testing kits are available throughout the United States. In fact, pharmacy chains have added these kits in stores nationwide because of their popularity. It is possible to conduct one of these tests for less than $30. This is a far cry from the hundreds of dollars that DNA testing in a lab costs. Although lab tests are more accurate, home DNA testing can provide enough proof to confirm a suspicion or refute an allegation. The general method of taking the test involves placing a swab inside the cheek, putting it in an envelope, mailing it to a lab and waiting for results.

Paternity/Maternity Testing
The most obvious and common reasons for home DNA kits is for paternity and maternity testing. More than 30% of men in the United States who have taken a paternity test have found out that the child they believed was theirs was actually fathered by another man. The man believed to be the father swabs his cheek and the child in question is also tested in the same way. The results are sent off and the results will show whether or not there is a DNA match. Obviously, no DNA match means no paternity. The same applies for maternity testing. It is not a foolproof method however because cheating is possible. This is why paternity/maternity tests do not stand up in court.

Long Lost Relatives
While paternity/maternity testing can tear a family apart, home DNA testing can also be used to bring a family together. If you suspect that someone you know may actually be a brother or sister, you can take a DNA test. Thousands of lost long siblings and family members have been reunited in this manner. Home DNA tests may hold the key to creating a family tree. Ancestors and relatives can be discovered by digging through genetic databases. Ancestors can be discovered from centuries ago because the Y chromosome does not change for generations.

Hereditary Illnesses
A home DNA testing kit is also useful when it comes to finding out whether or not you are predisposed to contract certain medical conditions. There are hundreds of maladies that may be hereditary. If your parents or grandparents suffered from a serious illness, you have the right to know if you will be afflicted by it too. However, if a genetic test shows that you are predisposed to suffer from a medical condition, it does not mean you will definitely contract it during the course of your life. There is always the chance that the illness could skip a generation for example.

Home DNA testing have changed the lives of millions of people around the world. Instead of wondering “what if?”, they can get definitive answers to searching questions that have plagued them for years. Home DNA testing can discover the identity of an unknown parent, reunite you with long lost relatives or inform you of a hereditary disease. Although the results of these tests are not 100% accurate, they are often more than enough proof for most people to rest easy.

DNA does not follow modern day political borders. For example, someone living in the modern day United States may have a genetic makeup that includes a wide array of ancestry markers including European and Native American. While it’s not currently possible to identify “United States DNA”, Ancestry By DNA ™ can differentiate between major geographic regions such as Native American (which includes North and South America) and European (which includes the Middle East, Northern Europe and parts of Pakistan/India). Of course, someone living today in the U.S. is likely to have an MLE percentage in both groups.

For centuries, people the world over have not been able to document their families’ links to tribal heritage. Many families pass down rumors to the effect that their mother or paternal grandmother was a “full blood” Native American from one tribe or another. So how do you sort out fact from fiction? Native American genetic testing can be an excellent way to verify your blood line. A Native American DNA test in some instances can turn the tide for descendants to reclaim their heritage and in certain cases, be eligible for tribal benefits.
Due to gross mistreatment of Native Americans herded onto reservations, hereditary record keeping was, at best, extremely haphazard. Through an unfortunate set of tragic circumstances, many Native Americans have no records of their heritage at all, or what records existed in the latter parts of the 19th and 20th centuries were destroyed.

Additionally, during those backward times, it was not uncommon for being of Native American descent to be looked down upon. To make life for themselves and their families easier, if a Native American descendant was able to pass as Caucasian, many chose to do so, abandoning their heritage in order to live more comfortably in current society.

Several websites offer quite a bit of information about DNA Native American genetic testing. Here are just a few:

www.dnaancestryproject.com

http://www.comanchelodge.com/cherokee-blood.html

http://www.dnacenter.com/native-american

http://www.familytreedna.com/landing/native-american-ancrestry.aspx

High quality DNA diagnostics testing centers take pride in having high accuracy track records, employing expert scientists and researchers, and taking great care to help clients confirm heritage as finitely as possible.

Some types of DNA tests have been tailored to provide the necessary criteria determined by your tribe’s unique needs. With regard to Native American genetic testing, it can provide the missing puzzle piece that snaps into place, providing crucial information about biological connections. Overall purposes of Native American genetic testing include:
• Establishment of paternity
• Reuniting adopted children with their biological relatives
• Providing evidentiary substantiation with regard to tribal enrollment or disenrollment
• Assistance in claiming child support and various other benefits

Here’s more detail/definition about each of these categories:
• Testing for Parentage (showing whether a tribal member is the child’s biological parent)
• Familial Relationship: This test establishes probability of relatedness to relatives (like grandparents and siblings)
• Y Chromosome & Mitochondrial DNA Tests can determine relatedness via either the paternal or maternal line

As far as the testing itself goes, various tests can help discover your blood quantum as well as suggest tribal affiliation. An extremely typical one is the basic cheek swab, performed by a trained professional. Another popular test is the DNA fingerprint test. It’s particularly helpful if your family history (pertaining to Native American ancestry) is totally unknown. Fingerprint DNA testing is one of the most sensitive formats; it can help track down even the most minuscule traces of Native blood.
Whatever you discover, it’s also good to bear in mind that our upbringing, customs, traditions and belief systems all contribute to who we are & who we identify with – not solely biological ties.
